Capital City Symphony - Convergence: When East Meets West

The Theresa and Jane Lang Theatre
Join us for an evening of saxophone and bansuri (Indian bamboo flute) as we join musicians Deepak Ram and Noah Getz in this genre and culture crossing performance.
Based at the Atlas Performing Arts Center in the H Street Corridor, Capital City Symphony (CCS) serves both audience members and orchestra members. By engaging with CCS, our audience members support our musicians, hear high-quality live music at a reasonable price, and enjoy our concerts in a fun, intimate environment. Our orchestra members volunteer with our orchestra in order to have the opportunity to engage with the joy of symphonic music-making. CCS draws over 80 orchestra members annually from Washington, D.C.’s unique pool of talented amateur musicians – many of whom have extensive training through the college or conservatory level - providing them with an opportunity to reconnect with their passion for music-making. Under the leadership of Artistic Director and Conductor Victoria Gau, the orchestra performs fun, challenging, and exciting repertoire from the 18th century to today!

Patriarchy is still transforming women into living dolls - devoid of independent thought. This dance theater explores their choreographed existence, and whether they able to walk away from it all. In this dance theater we journey from an old nursery rhyme in Bengal, to early-twentieth century US and India, to now, only to find that even now, patriarchy has boxed women into narrow roles transforming them into living dolls, devoid of independent thought. This performance explores their choreographed existence, and whether they able to break free.

Kristin Rebecca: Folk Music: Life told in Song

Lab Theatre I
Magical is a word often used to describe Kristin Rebecca. Her lyrical storytelling has captivated audiences around the country. Some of her stories are drawn from her life or experiences from the lives of others while other songs are inspired by mythology or purely come from her own imagination. Kristin’s unique harp playing style, angelic voice and guitar backings draw the listener further into her songs. Not just a songwriter, Kristin is a composer as well, writing original tunes ranging from up tempo jigs and reels to contemplative airs. She is an award-winning performer forging a new sound in a traditional genre.

Capitol Tap and District Tap, with special guests Tap City Youth Ensemble (NYC), bring rhythm and energy to the stage celebrating tap dance through the ages. Twenty-five tap dancers of all ages come together in this rousing celebration of tap dance, spanning over one hundred years of rhythms and motion.

Genre-defying artist Melissa Wimbish reflects upon and celebrates the legacy of Josephine Baker. Through the music of Tom Cipullo, Florence Price, H. Leslie Adams, and Gilda Lyons, Wimbish steps into the shoes of the trailblazing performer and activist.
This program is presented in collaboration with IN Series, where Melissa is a member of the inaugural Cardwell Dawson Artist Fellow cohort. The Artist Fellowship, designed by and for the participants, cedes place, power, and opportunity to Black singing artist-activist-leaders so that a dynamic ecosystem of operatic leadership emerges and proliferates.

Kim B Miller (Poet Laureate of Prince William County, VA) performs her bold poems, while Kelly Haneklau (award winning artist) creates an original painting on the spot to coincide with the poem’s message. Kelly creates her vivid interpretations in real time. When the poem ends, the painting is complete.

‘Look Beyond’ is comprised of all original works of GDC Artistic Director, Shu-Chen Cuff featuring uplifting and motivational works, ‘Aspire’ and ‘When the Wind Blows’ that delve into the importance of overcoming obstacles and circumstances outside of our control to achieve a fulfilled life and, ‘The Golden Time’ an Asian/culturally influenced work combining Chinese Opera movements and modern dance in exploring the golden time of Shanghai in the 1920s and the role women played during that era in China. Come join us for a special celebration and a unique cultural experience!

The struggles and the strengths. This poetic journey features four poets, four voices -- Kim B Miller, Quetta Nelson, Jeffrey Banks, and John Johnson --but one history.

Elements Dance Company presents "reFRESH"

The Theresa and Jane Lang Theatre
We challenged our dancers to think about the most limiting belief of Hip Hop Dance. This discussion revealed the challenging perceptions that Hip Hop dance was viewed as a purely entertainment-based dance form, unlike more westernized styles such as ballet and modern. The limited perception of Hip Hop dance is a symptom of a larger bias towards the communities that created the art form, specifically the African Americans community. Our solution to this problem was to create more Hip Hop dance specifically at a level that parallels what we, as a society, see as high art.
In EDC’s “reFRESH”, teen and adult choreographers will study some of the world’s most iconic dance works and create original dances inspired by these pieces...but through a Hip Hop lens. Through this show, we seek to expand the narrow views that many have of Hip Hop and to a larger degree the communities that created it.

Moveius Contemporary Ballet: Wonder

The Theresa and Jane Lang Theatre
In a triumphant return to the stage after the pandemic, Moveius Contemporary Ballet offers three compelling dance works inspired by phenomena that elicit a sense of wonder: the cosmos, nature, and music. Diana Movius’ powerful choreography blends contemporary athleticism with ballet technique, highlighting the strength of the company’s DC-based professional dancers. The show opens with The Listener, a meditation on the joy that listening to music can bring. Following is Apocrita, a contemporary dance about the intense but short lives of ants, wasps, and bees. In a visually-enticing and high-energy finale, the ballet Star Struck is inspired by the early pictures of the earth taken from space in the Apollo missions, capturing the wonder of the cosmos.

We challenged our dancers to think about the most limiting belief of Hip Hop Dance. This discussion revealed the challenging perceptions that Hip Hop dance was viewed as a purely entertainment-based dance form, unlike more westernized styles such as ballet and modern. The limited perception of Hip Hop dance is a symptom of a larger bias towards the communities that created the art form, specifically the African Americans community. Our solution to this problem was to create more Hip Hop dance specifically at a level that parallels what we, as a society, see as high art.
In EDC’s “reFRESH”, teen and adult choreographers will study some of the world’s most iconic dance works and create original dances inspired by these pieces...but through a Hip Hop lens. Through this show, we seek to expand the narrow views that many have of Hip Hop and to a larger degree the communities that created it.
