The performance follows the remarkable journey of Mihály Fabriczy Kováts, a Hungarian hussar whose life became a bridge between Hungary and the emerging United States.
Set in the mid-18th century, the story begins in a small Hungarian market town within the Habsburg Empire, where lively music, dance and the spirit of the hussars fill the streets during military recruitment. Among the dancers stands a young man who volunteers for service: Mihály Kováts.
His path soon leads to the imperial court of Maria Theresa in Vienna, where the refined world of aristocratic etiquette meets the bold, energetic presence of the Hungarian hussars. The contrast creates humorous and vivid scenes, highlighting cultural differences through dance, gesture and character.
The tone shifts as Kováts experiences the harsh realities of military life. After years of struggle and disillusionment, he chooses to leave Europe behind and boards a ship bound for the New World. The long ocean crossing becomes a stage for dynamic male dances, reflecting the restless spirit of the hussars.
In 1777, Kováts arrives in America, ready to join the fight for independence. Here he encounters new rhythms, new dances and a new community. Despite cultural differences, a shared belief in liberty creates a connection between the Hungarian hussar and the Americans he meets.
As war intensifies, Kováts offers his military experience to the American cause. He fights with the courage and discipline of a Hungarian hussar, serving the ideal of freedom until he is fatally wounded in battle.
In his final moments, visions of Hungary and America merge. Memories of his homeland and the faces of his American comrades surround him. The Hungarian and American flags appear side by side, symbolizing a lasting connection between the two countries and the legacy of a man who gave his life for freedom.
