Sex Monster is what happens when a theater artist (Jenna Murphy) and a jazz musician (Amy K Bormet) bond over the romantasy novels in their Kindle history while waiting for the Metro. If you’ve ever seduced a ghost, or would like to give it a try, this show is for you. This act contains mature content, and is not appropriate for children or pearl-clutchers.
This 50-minute cabaret distills the history of monsters through a contemporary (and sexy) female lens. Each song is from the perspective of or about a different monster.

Jenna Murphy is a theater artist and environmental activist in Washington D.C. Her works include Dress Up Day and Sex Monster, as well as numerous devised plays that have been presented at Arena Stage and Strathmore. She serves as a sustainability advisor for D.C. Tourism, addressing sustainability challenges unique to the performing arts industry.
Amy K Bormet is a pianist, vocalist, and composer, known for her fearless free-wheeling style and dedication to creating new music. To collaborate with and celebrate women musicians, she is the founded and has served as Artistic Director of the Washington Women in Jazz Festival, now in its 15th year.
Bormet and Murphy have been collaborating as composer and lyricist, respectively, since 2023. They met participating in the Alliance for New-Music Theater’s Composer-Librettist Studio, a program that fosters experimental collaboration between emerging writers and composers. Their easy rapport, shared love of romance novels, and desire to challenge patriarchal norms led to the creation of their first show, Sex Monster, a “rabidly feminine” cabaret about love, lust, and monsters. As grantees of the D.C. Commission on the Arts and Humanities, they produced Sex Monster in non-traditional theater spaces (like bookstores, cafes, and bars) to provide the D.C. community with socially and financially accessible performances. They both reside in Washington, D.C.
