A dance concert by inspired by Laurel Victoria Gray’s forthcoming book "Legacy of the Silk Road," evoking the history and enchantment of Central Asia and beyond. The dance of an ancient Persian fertility goddess, the Sogdian whirling dance that captivated Chinese poets, and a court dance for the Emir of Bukhara – these are some of the intriguing pieces that will take the audience on a time-traveling journey through the diverse cultural history of the Silk Road.

Carl Theodor Dreyer's The Passion of Joan of Arc will be live scored utilizing analog and digital sound equipment and software, including modular synth, eurorack, internet radio, and artist-created instruments and conductive objects.
"During the pandemic, I began to explore performance for social media, creating sculptures that would fit into the frame of Instagram, per se, outfitting them with computers and code I programmed in order to play them as digital instruments. These instruments were constructed from found objects, such as a sewing box, copper plumbing hardware, driftwood, etc." (John Moletress)

My concept for Attunment/“a-tune: meant” means hearing the spirit of Aminata Moseka in her poetry, writing and journals and allowing a guidance thru aligning with her work and composing from their...along side longtime collaborator: Michael Bowie, Abbey Lincoln's MD for over a decade. An experience, of going beyond empathy to create an experience of unbroken feeling connectedness by providing a reciprocal affect and/or resonating response. My concept for A*tune*meant/“attunement” includes hearing the spirit of Aminata Moseka in her poetry, writing and journals and allowing a guidance thru aligning with her creative responses to life by reflecting, sensing and sounding feelings in ways that resonate with the tone of her philosophy. Composing from that vibration. How will I do that? Thru research or her estate, resonating and composing from those experiences.

Do you need tap shoes to tap dance? Is musical accompaniment required? And is it dance, or music, or both? Explore the definition of tap dance with us as we dive into the origins and continued metamorphosis of this percussive art form through the use of various mediums, including sand, leather, and metal. Authentic in their recreation of historic works and absolute in their performances, Capitol Tap and District Tap display a repertoire of works in Note for Note. Percussive music is alive as these intergenerational dancers use wood, leather, sand, and, of course, tap shoes to bring both old and new works to the stage.

Word Dance Theater: MOVE! Women's Rights from Isadora Duncan to NOW

Join Word Dance Theater, musicians, and actors on a journey through time to explore the historic women’s rights movement and how it inspires us in 2023 to seek greater civic engagement and equity for all populations and particularly women. Performers will weave Isadora Duncan’s historical dances from the early suffragist period, with contemporary dances created by Duncan dancer and choreographer, Cynthia Word. Carlos César Rodríguez and RÓMEZ3arts will underscore the performance with musical selections that emphasize and blend with theatrical scenes, created from historical and contemporary writings of the women’s movement, to tell the stories of what has changed and what has not. Each scene will celebrate and build upon the heritage of the women’s rights movement, then and now.

Since 2008, Akua Allrich has curated and performed a soul-stirring tribute presentation, honoring Nina Simone and Miriam Makeba. In her tribute concerts, rising vocalist, composer, and educator, Akua Allrich pays homage to these two powerhouse artists, who have inspired her and millions of other jazz and music lovers around the globe. The tribute features the songs that Nina Simone and Miriam Makeba made their own. "[These] women were mainstays in my development as a child," explains Allrich, whose own musical genesis comprises the blues, jazz, R&B, and pan-African music. "My parents came out of the civil rights movement, and these two were musicians who made music based on freedom and self-expression, and particularly African expression." Allrich’s Nina Simone Miriam Makeba tribute will leave you feeling both empowered and inspired!

Through Fish Eyes follows the relationship between humans and water. The piece gives a voice to water by bringing to life the once abundant ocean that has now been ravaged by people. It concludes with a call to action that urges humankind to change their destructive behavior.

Wax & Wane explores the human condition and how it directly relates to our everyday worldly lived experiences. This evening length work, created by Raeanna “Rae” Grey in collaboration with the artists, showcases a plethora of relationships between the individual and the collective as they directly or indirectly relate to one another. Together we will explore the highs and lows that one may experience on a day to day basis and how they directly relate to the lived moments we all go through on this adventure we call life. Wax & Wane, in short, is a movement study of how we learn to coexist with ourselves and our complex human emotions as well as with others. Throughout this evening, we will experience high and low energy along with different exertions of force and power that will stimulate and awaken the space around us.

"During the pandemic, I began to explore performance for social media, creating sculptures that would fit into the frame of Instagram, per se, outfitting them with computers and code I programmed in order to play them as digital instruments. Explore the definition of tap dance with us as we dive into the origins and continued metamorphosis of this percussive art form through the use of various mediums, including sand, leather, and metal. Authentic in their recreation of historic works and absolute in their performances, Capitol Tap and District Tap display a repertoire of works in Note for Note. Percussive music is alive as these intergenerational dancers use wood, leather, sand, and, of course, tap shoes to bring both old and new works to the stage.

Join Word Dance Theater, musicians, and actors on a journey through time to explore the historic women’s rights movement and how it inspires us in 2023 to seek greater civic engagement and equity for all populations and particularly women. Performers will weave Isadora Duncan’s historical dances from the early suffragist period, with contemporary dances created by Duncan dancer and choreographer, Cynthia Word. Carlos César Rodríguez and RÓMEZ3arts will underscore the performance with musical selections that emphasize and blend with theatrical scenes, created from historical and contemporary writings of the women’s movement, to tell the stories of what has changed and what has not. Each scene will celebrate and build upon the heritage of the women’s rights movement, then and now.

The performance combines live instrumental and vocal music, short films from Simpson's 2020 "Sparklers" daily video series with live and recorded accompaniment, dance pieces featured and in dialogue with film, story, and song. The music ranges from pop to folk to jazz to electronic to world music styles (Greece, Argentina, Spain).

Since 2008, Akua Allrich has curated and performed a soul-stirring tribute presentation, honoring Nina Simone and Miriam Makeba. In her tribute concerts, rising vocalist, composer, and educator, Akua Allrich pays homage to these two powerhouse artists, who have inspired her and millions of other jazz and music lovers around the globe. The tribute features the songs that Nina Simone and Miriam Makeba made their own. "[These] women were mainstays in my development as a child," explains Allrich, whose own musical genesis comprises the blues, jazz, R&B, and pan-African music. "My parents came out of the civil rights movement, and these two were musicians who made music based on freedom and self-expression, and particularly African expression." Allrich’s Nina Simone Miriam Makeba tribute will leave you feeling both empowered and inspired!
