Going OUt Guru's list Atlas and one of H Street's Best Bets
September 2, 2010
Best Bets on H Street NE Once upon a time, the H Street corridor of Northeast was one of the biggest shopping and entertainment districts in the D.C. region. Then, like other parts of Washington, the area was torn apart in the riots after the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. was assassinated. As recently as five years ago, H Street was still a string of boarded-up storefronts, Chinese carryouts and discount beauty salons. But then things began to change. The Atlas theater reopened. The Argonaut (itself the victim of a recent fire) and other bars began to move into the neighborhood. The Palace of Wonders offered burlesque and sword swallowing performances, the Red and the Black hosted indie bands before (slightly) growing crowds. Hipsters started hanging out and getting late-night fish sandwiches at Horace & Dickie's. Then everything exploded, and restaurants and bars began attracting larger and larger crowds. But H Street has become more than a strip of late-night bars: There's dance, cutting-edge art and even a kid-friendly wine bar. We know we've written a lot about H Street, and if you're a savvy Washingtonian, you've probably putt-putted past zombie presidents at the H Street Country Club and grabbed a pie to go from Dangerously Delicious. But there's more to H Street than novelty stops. Here are some of the destinations that keep us coming back.

Mid-Atlantic Construction Announces Best of 2007 Winners

Library of Congress National Audio-Visual Conservation Center honored as overall best

WASHINGTON, DC - Mid-Atlantic Construction magazine announced the winners of its Best of 2007 awards program today. After deliberating over a record number of entries, an independent jury selected the Library of Congress National Audio-Visual Conservation Center as the region's Overall Project of the Year. The Culpeper, Va., project consolidates audio-visual collections from four states and the District of Columbia into the world's largest and most comprehensive collection of moving images and sound recordings. The project involves the adaptive reuse of a former Cold War bunker built into a hillside. SmithGroup of Washington, D.C., was the project architect. DPR Construction of Falls Church, Va., was the construction manager.

The jury honored 46 projects in 16 categories, including Adaptive Reuse, Bridge, Cultural, Education, Healthcare, High-Rise Residential, Institutional, Interior Fit-Out, Mixed-Use, Office, Renovation, Restoration, Retail, Small Projects (under $5 million), Sports & Entertainment, and Transit/Parking Garage.

The projects will be honored in the Winter 2007 edition of Mid-Atlantic Construction and during an awards ceremony Dec. 14, 2007, in Baltimore, Md. In addition to honoring the firms who submitted the projects, all key team members will be recognized for their efforts.

The jury focused on those projects that best achieved the established goals of the project team; overcame significant challenges; adopted innovative approaches; and exhibited exceptional teamwork. Jurors were allowed to award one Project of the Year per category and multiple Awards of Merit. Jurors could choose to not award a Project of the Year or Awards of Merit in the categories. The jurors, who represent owners, architects, engineers and general contractors, are all active members of the local building community. They abstained from voting on any projects with which they are affiliated or have a conflict of interest.

Mid-Atlantic Construction is a quarterly magazine published by McGraw-Hill Companies that focuses on the people, projects and trends that affect the design and construction community in Maryland, Virginia, Delaware, eastern Pennsylvania and the District of Columbia.
