W. Allen Taylor
In Search of My Father…Walkin’ Talkin’ Bill Hawkins
Written and Performed by W. Allen Taylor
Original direction by Ellen Sebastian Chang
Winner of the “Best Solo Performance Award” by the San Francisco Bay Area Theatre Critics Circle, this 90-minute show explores the intimate story of Taylor’s life-long search for his absent father, Bill Hawkins, the first black disc jockey in Cleveland, Ohio. With period rhythm & blues, gospel and jazz serving as a backdrop, Taylor plays a wide range of colorful characters, while juxtaposing personal stories of childhood longing and surrogate fathers with unique historical recollections of “Walkin’ Talkin’ Bill Hawkins” drawn from personal interviews. The search becomes a bittersweet journey of self-discovery, as well as a celebration of the rich cultural legacy of black radio.
