This multimedia performance features the award-winning music of American composer, Matthew Burtner performed by the EcoSono Ensemble with dance by Joy of Motion Dance Center’s Youth Dance Ensemble Company and poetry by Rita Dove. The concert features a full performance of “The Ceiling Floats Away”, the NEA Award Winning work for interactive music and poetry, featuring the “Nomads” audience-interaction software system designed by the University of Virginia’s Interactive Media Research Group (IMRG).
Pulitzer Prize-winning poet, Rita Dove collaborated with Burtner to create this rich musical setting of poetry that enables the audience to interact directly with the poetry and music through their smart phones during interludes. Joy of Motion will improvise movement with the audience-interactive poetry and music. The performance will also feature select songs from the IDEA award-winning multimedia opera “Auksalaq”, a work premiered by EcoSono Ensemble in Washington DC in 2012. Songs from the piece such as “You Sink Into the Singing Snow” and “Vaporous Clouds Condense” established a new genre of ecoacoustic climate change song. Stunning media by Auksalaq collaborators Scott Deal, Jordan Munson and ice scientists at the UAF Arctic Research Center will accompany the songs. The performance will open with the work “Golden Sparrow,” played by trumpet artist Glen Whitehead with the Joy of Motions Dancers. “Golden Sparrow” features the call of this Alaskan bird that sings in the midnight sun in the Chugach Mountains. In counterpoint with the trumpet melody, the dancers create a sculpture of light and movement.
